What are compression socks?

In short
Compression socks are snug, stretchy garments designed to apply pressure to the lower leg. Many everyday and sport styles use graduated compression — typically firmer at the ankle and easing up the calf.
They are popular with travellers, runners, people on their feet at work, and some people managing tired or swollen legs. They are not a cure-all, and stronger medical-grade products should only be used with clinical guidance.
Graduated vs uniform
Graduated designs aim to support circulation return toward the heart by applying more pressure lower down. Uniform compression applies similar pressure throughout. Product labels and mmHg ranges vary by brand — always read the specific chart.
What they are not
- Not a substitute for medical care
- Not guaranteed to prevent blood clots or treat disease
- Not one-size-fits-all — fit and mmHg matter
When people commonly try them
Long flights or drives, long training blocks, standing shifts, and days when legs feel heavy. See our guides on travel, sport and work.
