Compression for work and all-day standing

Updated 2026-09-08 · 6 min read · All guides

General information only — not medical advice. If you are unsure whether compression is suitable, ask a clinician first.

On your feet all day

Retail, hospitality, healthcare, teaching and warehouse roles involve long standing or walking. Some people find light-to-moderate compression socks reduce end-of-day heaviness. Others prefer supportive footwear, insoles, or scheduled sit breaks instead.

Desk work

Sitting for hours can also leave legs feeling sluggish. Compression is optional; movement snacks and desk setup usually matter more.

Choosing for shifts

  • Prioritise comfort for 8–12 hour wear
  • Breathable fabric if you work in warm environments
  • Dark or uniform-friendly colours if needed
  • Have more than one pair so you can wash and rotate

Pregnancy note

Some pregnant people are advised about compression for swelling or comfort. Needs vary widely — follow midwife or GP guidance rather than internet dosing by mmHg.
